Participants will gain practical insights into identifying suitable grant schemes, communicating research ideas to non-specialist assessors and industry partners, and developing compelling, impact-driven proposals. The session will explore what funding assessors look for in successful applications, how to position yourself and your team as the best fit for a project, and how to craft a persuasive research narrative with broad impact beyond academia. Featuring panel discussions with experienced grant recipients and hands-on activities, the masterclass will provide participants with the opportunity to apply these strategies by developing a research idea into a potential grant application.

This masterclass is designed for multidisciplinary researchers at all career stages seeking to secure competitive funding from academic and industry sources. It responds to strong demand from early-career researchers within the centre and aims to translate this need into a timely, practical training opportunity.

According to research, only 25% of PhD students find work in academia post submission (Neumann & Tan, 2011). This does not mean that research experience and the skills developed in a PhD are not highly valued in industry. Thinking about work after PhD can be daunting, as can be the idea of transitioning into a different sector. On top of this, working with industry also presents opportunities for greater research impact.
This workshop addresses the challenges HDRs face with research translation, networking, and positioning themselves for work in/with industry post-submission. The workshop includes both a panel and a hands-on skills-sharing activity. Participants will come away with new strategies for research success.
