Rita Jabri Markwell

Rita Jabri Markwell is a lawyer and public policy advisor who has published critical research on addressing borderline content, and terrorism and violent extremism definitions. The Australian Muslim Advocacy Network, which she advises,  has mounted harm prevention strategies that combine research, legal action and policy dialogue to test laws and problem-solve vexed issues. AMAN’s work contemplates the full spectrum of the public information environment, including the interplay between media, social media and official/political rhetoric. 

Rita is a member of the Legal Frameworks Working Group of the Global Internet Forum to Counter-Terrorism and recently led a Christchurch Call Advisory Network report on dehumanising speech and discourse (including through disinformation) as a better-defined policy intervention point. Rita regularly collaborates with researchers and other civil society organisations.
